A toy with hidden parts that give it a second use can add to its value, so look carefully atunfamiliar playthings.A teddy bear might have a hidden music box inside.A tiny bear with a removable head can be a valuable perfume bottle.Even more surprising are a pair of seated bisque dolls that double as liquor decanters. Thedolls, made by Gebruder Heubach of Germany, are shaped like charming babies {keyword} with blond hair andside-glancing eyes. At first they look like the familiar piano babies. Why a decanter hiding in a doll? They were made in 1910, before Prohibition, so there was nolegal reason to hide alcoholic drinks. Perhaps some people felt that bottled spirits should bestored out of sight in a 9-inch-tall ceramic figurine. This type of decanter is rare. The dolls as a pair sold for $969 in June.Q: I recently acquired a 16-inch cast-iron bell and yoke. The bell has the number2 on the top. The yoke is marked “The C.S. Bell Co.,” “2” and “Hillsboro, O.” on one side and “No.2 Yoke” and “1886” on the other side. It’s clean and not rusted. What is it worth?A: C.S. Bell Co. was founded by Charles Singleton Bell. He operated a foundry inHillsboro, Ohio, beginning in 1858. The company made farm equipment and stoves. One day, while working to develop a new type of metal alloy, Bell accidentally dropped a pieceof the metal and discovered that it made a ringing sound like a bell. The company began makingbells from the new alloy, and by the 1880s C.S. Bell was the largest producer of bells in NorthAmerica. Most bronze bells are marked with the name of the company on the bell, but C.S. Bell alwaysmarked the yoke instead. The Bell family continued to operate the business until 1974. Bells weremade at the Hillsboro site until at least 1984. Another company, Prindle Station, {keyword} today claims tomake bells that are identical to the original bells made by C.S. Bell. A C.S. Bell Co. bell with aNo. 2 yoke sold recently for more than $250.Current pricesPrices are recorded from antiques {keyword} shows, flea markets, sales and auctions.• B O Railroad sign, Baltimore station scene, cast iron, round, painted, circa 1910, 16 1/2inches, $145.• Grecian vase, basalt, classical figures, black, circa 1810, 4 1/2 inches, pair, $370.• Newcomb Pottery vase, loquat berries, leaves, blue, green, pink, Sadie Irvine, 1920, 3 inchesby 5 1/4 inches, $715.• Chinese Export vase, famille rose, temple, palace figures, circa 1920, 53 inches, $13,750.Terry Kovel writes for King Features Syndicate. Two scourges that caused long delays to last year’s Daytona 500 -- a wet track and the highly combustible jet fuel used to dry it -- could become non-factors for this season’s Sprint Cup season opener.NASCAR will unveil a new drying system at next month’s Speedweeks that is expected to improve efficiency by 80%, drying Daytona International Speedway in 30 minutes instead of two and a half hours.”That’s the goal, and we’re real close,” chairman Brian France said Tuesday on the Sprint Media Tour. ”We also are going to do it in a much more green carbon emission friendly way. We’re going to be able to dry Martinsville (Speedway, the circuit’s shortest track) in 15 minutes. It’s going to be a spectacular thing, and all auto racing will benefit from this.”NASCAR president Mike Helton said the new system will be a series of pipes attached to the rear of a pickup truck that will use compressed air and heat to remove water, eschewing the jet dryer approach that depended on blowing hot air on the asphalt.”We used to dry tracks off with just a fleet of vehicles going around the racetrack, or dragging tires behind pickup tricks, and then someone came along with the jet dryer that expedited it quite a bit and served its purpose for a long period of time,” Helton said. ”But in today’s world with the expectations of getting the show done, there was a high priority placed by Brian and the rest of us to come up with a way that we could expedite that, and this seems to have quite a bit of validity to it.”NASCAR vice president of operations Steve O’Donnell couldn’t provide a full description of the new system because of pending patents but said it would resemble ”a wave of water coming off the track.” O’Donnell said two dozen new dryers will be used in conjunction with existing equipment at Daytona.Last year’s Daytona 500 was the first in the 53-year history of the event to be delayed by rain and started 30 hours late on Monday night. It was stopped for more than two hours when Juan Pablo Montoya’s Chevrolet collided with a jet dryer under caution, sparking a 20-foot wall of flames.

Latino Civil War Veteran Given Military Honors Nearly a Century After Death
When Eloy Zamora's mother told him that his great grandfather had fought in the Guerra Civil, or Civil War, he assumed she meant the Mexican Revol {keyword} ution.

Zamora, a Mexican American, had no idea his mother meant the American Civil War.

"It was really a surprise for all of us to find out," in Texas after searching for the information on the Internet.

Sgt. Ignacio Zamora fought for the Union in the civil war and died ninety-five years ago, but thanks to his great-grandson's work he was finally given his proper military honors.

Zamora, a veteran who served in the Army in West Berlin in 1971 and 1972, gathered all of the necessary paperwork and received a military headstone from the United St {keyword} ates Department of Veterans Affairs for his great grandfather, according to the local newspaper.

Thanks to Eloy's efforts, Sgt. Zamora's headstone now sits next to his relatives graves in a small cemetary in Peñitas, Texas.

“It’s just an awesome and great feeling to know that someone in our family fought in the Civil War, which was the bloodiest war and most horrific war we’ve had in the U.S.,” he said.

Sgt. Zamora was 26 when he enlisted in the U {keyword}nion Army in Brownsville in 1864 and served until November 1865. He died in 1912 at the age of 82.

The sergeant is one of a fairly large number of Mexican-Americans who served in the Civil War, according to The Monitor, about 2550 Mexican-Texans fought for the Confederacy and 950 fought in the Union Army.

Message:Hi - fascinating - I read all of it. (I am Vasco Da Gamer on Euro Nova by the way). I hope you don't mind but I have a question. Those wing mirros look just right to look over/round the Nova hips, would you mind telling me what car they are sourced from ? :-). I have looked at loads and loads and yours look the best option without hacking more holes in my bodywork. Many thanks - and Happy Christmas ! Steve.
